The first settings I change in every new game

April 9, 2026 · Lukas Brenner

Every time I install a game, I go straight to the settings before I play. Default settings are usually tuned to look flashy in a store screenshot, not to feel good in your hands over an hour.

First stop is the graphics menu. I match the frame rate to what my screen supports and turn down effects that don't add much. Smooth beats shiny almost every time on a phone.

Then I check the controls. Resizing and repositioning buttons for my thumbs makes a huge difference, and turning off any vibration I don't want saves a little battery too.

Finally, audio and notifications. A quick pass through these settings turns a decent game into a comfortable one, and it takes about a minute.
